What is Mixed Media in Visual Arts?

Mixed media art involves mixing different types of creative mediums, which can include things like photographs, paint, found objects that speak to you or even printed pages of your favorite book. By incorporating these different elements, you will produce a piece of work that is uniquely expressive.

This class is perfect for students who want to explore their own individualistic and artistic vision. For example, you can add texture to your painting through palette knife work, or draw on top of photographic prints, or create collages with cut papers and found objects. Mixed media is about breaking down  the boundaries between different art forms. Join us to discover what’s your soul. Let’s make it come to life!

What will I learn?

• Drawing Techniques: with mediums such as charcoal, pencil, watercolour pencils, conte, pastels, graphite powder and more. 

• Painting & Brushstroke Techniques: with a variety of acrylic paint viscosities and interesting mediums

• Printmaking & Collage Techniques: with bonding elements (Matte or Gel Medium) to be used in conjunction with painting

• Colour Mixing Techniques: to create beautiful colour combinations

There’s MORE! You will also get to learn and practice Creative Techniques such as photo transfers, acrylic skins, use of plaster, textural elements and found objects. We want you to get curious! We will foster Creative Experimentation by exploring interesting and unusual tools and mediums that speak to you.

Class Enrollment

Sign up and register for classes below. Each class will include 3 hours of guided instruction. You can join us by registering online. Space is limited! 

• 6 students can enroll in the studio per session.

• Our studio is located at 1000 Parker Street, Studio 208

If you want an experimental experience, you can try our single session appointment (3hr) with one of our instructors.

We also have a package deal for those who would like a multiple classes. Our multiple session package (total 24hr’s of class) option will give you 8 class sessions and you can choose classes from either Sonya or Denna.

Class Material

• In-Studio Students: All supplies are available for students to use for an $100 Material Fee, this includes paint, mediums, drawing utensils (charcoal, graphite, pastels, watercolour pencils), tools , some collage papers, stencils, (extra fees may apply for larger quantity needs or special materials). 

• Virtual Students: Based on one of the Kits below, supplies need to be purchased and received before class commences. Kits can be picked up in-person at our studio by appointment or the materials can be mailed to you (shipping costs are not included). please email info@theartway.ca, pick up hours are typically between 1-5pm

• All students: Students who have their own supplies comparable to our recommended lists below, can use their own supplies. Panels and paper are paid for as needed.
